The baseball RedHawks host the Wolves of Cardinal Stritch on Tuesday March 30th in a doubleheader beginning at 1pm from RedHawk Field. After picking up their first victory of the season, the Hawks look to continue the momentum. The Wolves come to Gary after losing two of three to the Illinois Institute of Technology Scarlet Hawks and with a record of 4-14 overall while the Hawks come in with a record of 1-19.
The Redhawks fought hard this past Sunday and got their first win over Calumet College of St. Joseph 11-7. The win represents their first victory over an NAIA opponent and equals their victory total from 2009. Chris Jefferson scattered seven runs over nine innings in firing a complete game. He struck out nine and walked six while throwing a career high of 160 pitches.
Ethan Arvay came through with four runs batted in and looks to continue the winning streak. "It was great because we all had to do our own part to win the game. And every player produced in someway to help the team win the game. From a few key bunts & hits and a terrific pitching performance by Jefferson", Arvay said. Arvay put the game away against CCSJ with a double that drove in two runs in the eighth inning and was also asked how it felt to finally come through with runners on base: "Felt great finally getting that hit. Cause I have been struggling the past few games with runners in scoring position. So that gave me a boost in confidence at the plate after getting the couple hits."
"Ethan is a great guy. He did have chances to score runs in games before, but on Sunday we were pulling for him every time he came up to bat. I was glad to see him come through in big situations and come up with huge rbi", said teammate Chris Samano. Samano contributed one hit in five trips to the plate on Sunday with a run scored and also offered this thought about the performance of Chris Jefferson: "Chris Jefferson pitched great. He kept us in the game pretty much the whole way. He pitched his heart out. I was glad to see us finally pull through for him."
Arvay agrees: "That was the best I have ever seen him pitch. We gave him runs that he deserved to help him win. He has pitched good all season but we never gave him run support. But as the game went on he pounded the zone and let the defense make the plays but the 9 ks he had were all huge."
You can hear both games on the Redhawk Sports Network beginning this evening at 7pm on "RedHawk Replay"
