The Lady RedHawks seemed to be in control for much of the night and seemed headed toward a season opening victory. Despite leading by double figure for nearly the entire night and holding a 10-point halftime lead, the RedHawks were plagued by turnovers throughout the game and could not hold off Grace College who's late rally forced overtime.Freshman Vicky Campos had an opportunity to win the game in regulation, however her last second 35-foot heave hit off the back iron.
The momentum that Grace built at the end of regulation carried over to the overtime period. Despite a go ahead three from Sophomore Nina Wills, the RedHawks could not match Grace's energy finally succumbing to a 77-68 season opening defeat. When asked for comment Head Coach Ryan Shelton said, "We played hard enough to win, just not smart enough. We're disappointed with the outcome, however you have to give Grace credit, they never gave up and at the end it seemed like we did. They (Grace) made the plays when it counted and we didn't…it's that simple. The opportunities were there to put them away and didn't take advantage. We'll take away positives and learn from our mistakes, I'm certain we'll bounce back."
The RedHawks were led by sophomore forward Sharon Houston who finished with 23 points, 13 rebounds and 5 blocks despite having to leave the game several times in the 2nd half with leg cramps. Sophomore guards Juliette Keller and Nina Wills reached double figures with 13 and 12 points respectively and sophomore forward Ashley Michalski chipped in with 8 rebounds.
The Lady RedHawks return to action on Saturday Nov. 14 at 5pm at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, IL.
