Walter Robinson
Mon, Dec 21, 2009 - [Men's Basketball]

Walt Robinson is an interesting fellow. Not only is he a strong player on the men's basketball team, he has an eye for the cinema and a mean funny bone. I sat down with him last week to get a handle on his immense complexity.

Where did you group up?

I grew up in Southern Indiana.

Where?

Rockport

What's Rockport all about?

Rockport's about a whole lot of nothing. Actually, Abraham Lincoln lived in Rockport for a time.

How did you get into sports?

The first sport I picked was baseball. I played because my older brothers played.

What inspires you as an athlete?

I'm a really curious person. The players come to the game in bright clothes and these tight pants and tight shirts. Then they put this thing on their hand and throw this little thing around. I'm wondering why they're doing that, and then while I'm watching them do it, I want to do it too.

What brought you to IUN?

2000 white Ford Taurus.

What kind of kid were you in middle school?

I like to come off as a tough guy. Really, I was kind of quiet but I was pretty talkative.

How were you quiet but talkative?

I wasn't loud and obnoxious, but I would talk to people.

What were your interests in school aside from sports?

In Middle School I was a total tool. [laughs] Actually, you know what, in middle school I made movies almost daily. I was writing, directing, and producing shorts. It got to the point where my mom was saying "not today."

How do you feel the men's RedHawks are doing so far this year?

We're small, smaller than last year. We have a tough time rebounding some of the time. I think we're starting to come together right now. The thing I like about us is that a lot of teams come here and look at us and we're so ragtag. I think we can if thrive off of that personality. It was the same thing last year. When we step up and play with a purpose, we can beat anybody.

What's your major?

I'm a communications major with a focus in media, and an English minor with a focus in writing.

Tell me about your college experience up to this point.

You know, Donald, I think it's been a pretty traditional college experience, full of wonderment, love, and healthy eating habits. I went to a school in Georgia and one in Kentucky and some in Indiana and what not.

That's interesting. Why have you been to so many schools, Walt?

I like to travel.

I heard you were a college basketball coach for a time. How'd you like it?

Yes, Donald, that's true. I was the head JV coach at Brewton-Parker College for a semester. We were 1-9, so I think my record does the talking for me.

And what, exactly, was it saying, Walt?

It was saying, "You should probably go do something else.Something you don't suck at."

What is your advice for future RedHawks?

I'll tell you what my dad told me. He said, "Walt… Always measure twice, and cut once."
