KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Sharon Houston of Indiana University-Northwest has been named the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Houston is the first honoree of the 2009-10 season based on her performances from Dec. 28 - Jan. 3. She was chosen out of a pool of conference player of the week selections among 14 conferences.
Houston, a 6-4 sophomore, broke her own previous single-game school scoring record (38) by scoring 40 points and matched her school record of 23 rebounds in an 81-79 victory over Judson (Ill.) on Jan. 2. She also had three steals and a pair of blocks in the win.
The Merrillville, Ind., native became the first player in RedHawk history to surpass the 1,000 point mark in mid-December. Houston accomplished the feat on Dec. 18 in a 71-62 win over Trinity Christian (Ill.).
Nationally, Houston tops the stat charts in four categories: blocks per game (4.27), offensive rebounds per game (6.47), total rebounds per game (14.8) and total blocks (64). She is also second in total scoring (389), total rebounds (222) and points per game (25.93). Her 8.33 defensive rebounds per game ranks fourth and .559 field goal percentage is listed 13th.
