Sharon Houston, sophomore, was the breakout story in IU athletics last year. She finished the 2008-2009 season ranked second by the NAIA II in scoring (24.7), first in rebounding (15.6), and second in blocks (5.3). At 6-4 she is an unstoppable presence on the court. This week we sit down to talk about what brought her to IU Northwest, and where she plans to go next.
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Gary, Indiana.
When did you start playing basketball?
I started playing basketball at grade three.
When did you realize you were really good?
That would probably be in middle school or high school when coaches would come to see me play to get me to come to their school.
Where did you go to school?
High school I went to Lew Wallace, middle school I went to Bailly, and I went to Pittman Square for elementary. That's where I learned to play basketball. My coach showed me the fundamentals and everything.
What brought you here?
You know, the school-- and just wanting to play basketball.
How do you feel about the team dynamics off the court?
Everyone gets along great.
What about on the court?
We're well put together. There are a lot of guards and shooters. We're just well-rounded.
How has your family reacted to all of the awards you've gotten?
They're proud of me. Just waiting to see what I bring home next.
What are your personal goals?
Basically for me to graduate college and to get a job in the major I'm in, which is criminal justice, and then from there it's to live life.
Where'd your interest in criminal justice come from?
My dad. He's a retired police from the Gary Police Department. Sixty-six years old.
What kind of job are you hoping for? Anything specific?
Something in corrections.
In the area?
Maybe not. [laughter]
Do you have any advice for the future Lady RedHawks?
My only advice for the RedHawks is to play hard every game and never give up.
