IU Northwest had everything working for them in the first half, high intensity defense and a sharp transition game helped the Lady RedHawks start strong, however they could not finish well enough as Purdue Calumet overcame a 14 point deficit to win 88-75 at the IU Northwest Savannah Center.
Stingy RedHawk defense helped them open a 14 point lead late in the first half before taking a 8 point lead into the break. The RedHawks tough perimeter defense limited Purdue to ineffective outside shooting in the first half (0-15 from 3-point range), however PUC would eventually find their stroke in the second half (6-10) and used their transition game en route to 54 second half points and a comeback win. IU Northwest was plagued by poor free throw shooting (13-25) and foul trouble throughout the game particularly to their starting lineup and formidable front-line. Houston, Jenelle Kapelnski, Ish Shah Terry and point guard Nina Wills each had 2 apiece fouls at the break. It didn't get much better in the second half when Houston, Kapelinski and Wills all picked up their 3rd fouls early in the early minutes.
IU Northwest was led by sophomore guard Juliette Keller who finished with a team high 22 points with 7 rebounds and 3 steals and sophomore forward Sharon Houston who notched another double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman forward Justine Jones scored a career-high 15 points including 11 in the first half as she was the beneficiary of several transition opportunities from point guard Nina Wills. Wills finished with 8 points and 7 assists. "Our kids wanted this game and played hard enough to win it. Our opponent made the adjustments and outplayed us in the second half and you have to give them credit for doing so. We're disappointed, however it's just one game win or lose and we have to move on and get ready for the next one. I'm proud of my team" said Ryan Shelton, IU Northwest Head Coach.
Purdue Calumet's senior center Sara Keilman led all scorer's with 26 points. The loss ended IU Northwest's 5 game winning streak and dropped them to a 12-7 overall record on the season. The Lady RedHawks will look to get back in the win column this Thursday when they host Moody Bible Institute in the first game of a men's and women's double header. The women's game tips at 5pm with men beginning at 7.
