Keller Continues Hot-Shooting, Houston Racks Up Double-Double
The IU Northwest Lady RedHawks turned up the pressure and finished the regular season on a high-note by running past the Marygrove Mustangs 68-36 en route to their 7th straight victory and 20th overall. Their 7 straight win is the 2nd longest winning streak in school history (9, 2008-2009) and the RedHawks reached 20 regular season wins (20-10) for the first time in school-history.
The victory was also the fourth straight for the RedHawks on the road. The IU Northwest defense held Marygrove to just 17% shooting for the game and 66% (1-15) from 3-pt range. The 36 points scored by Marygrove is the fewest of any RedHawk opponent this season.
Sophomores Juliette Keller and Sharon Houston led IU Northwest again as the duo continues to be a deadly "inside-out" combination. Coming off a career-high 34 points Tuesday night in a win over Holy Cross, Keller continued her red-hot shooting, pouring in a game-high 28 on 8-13 from the field and 4-7 from 3-pt range. Houston continued her dominance in the post going for 19 points (9-14 fg), 18 rebounds and 5 blocks in just 22 minutes of action. With the exception of Houston and Keller, we didn't shoot the ball particularly well tonight, however we wanted to bring the intensity on defense after a long bus ride. We figured that if we came to play defensively, we could do enough offensively to win the game. Considering the injuries we have had to some of our most experienced players, 20 regular season wins is an outstanding achievement, but we have a lot more that we want accomplish this season" according to Head Coach Ryan Shelton.
The win on Saturday was the 2nd in over Marygrove in just weeks as the RedHawks began their 7-game winning streak with a 77-61 victory over the Mustangs on Jan. 30. IU Northwest and Marygrove will square off for a 3rd time in less than a month when they face each other again this Saturday, Feb. 26 @ 6:30pm in the 2nd game of the opening round of the A.I.I. Tournament. "It's rare to face the same team this often, especially twice in less than a week, however we have to remain focused this week in practice and get ready for our biggest game of the year on Friday" added Shelton.
For the game, IU Northwest shot 42% from the field (27-65), 57% from 3-point range (4-7) and 53% from the free throw line. IU Northwest outrebounded Marygrove 66-43. The Lady RedHawks return to action this Friday as the #2 seed in the A.I.I. Conference Tournament to be held at the IU Northwest Savannah Center Feb. 26-27. The RedHawks fill square off Marygrove for a 3rd time this season with the tip at 6:30 p.m. #1 seed Ohio Dominican will take on Johnson and Wales University (Denver, CO) in the opening game beginning at 4pm.
