Amanda Pennington and Megan Leal are wrapping up their very first season on the RedHawks basketball team. They sat down with me to reflect on the past season and talk about how it differs from high school sports.

When did you start playing basketball?

Megan Leal: I started playing when I was about five. I went to see my cousin play basketball. She was on travel team.

Amanda Pennington: When I was younger, I don't know what age I was.

Does anything set basketball apart from other sports?

ML: It's more of a team sport. You rely more on your teammates. You have to count on somebody to guard their man.

AP: I don't think so. No.

What's been the highlight of the season for you?

MP: Making so many wins. Last year they didn't get twenty and we almost have twenty.

AP: Homecoming, I think. I like it so much because I'm on a winning team finally.

How was the high school experience different from the college experience?

AP: The tempo is a lot faster here.

ML: Yeah, when I played at Calumet we went really fast. Here we slow down the ball and then go really fast. We just kept running and running.

What makes a good basketball team?

ML: You have to have chemistry.

AP: Definitely. You have to get along with your teammates.

What's it feel like being a freshman on a college team?

ML: Different. I'm used to being a star.

AP: At first I felt like I was by myself. But since I've gotten along with my teammates, I feel a lot more comfortable.

What's your major?

ML: Now it's education.

AP: Elementary education.

Amanda, tell me about your major.

AP: I want to teach kindergarten and first grade. I love little kids and I've always been around them. I've been set on it since I was younger.

What do you want to do with your degree when you graduate?

ML: Be a teacher and a coach.

Coach basketball?

ML: Volleyball.

What do you do with friends on a night out?

ML: We watch movies and shows.

AP: Seriously, we just go with the flow. Whatever pops into our minds we do.

ML: Yeah, you're very spontaneous. She went and got a tattoo out of the blue with her best friends. [laughs]

What kind of shows do you watch?

ML: My new obsession is the L Word.

Do you have any advice for future RedHawks?

ML: Just stick with it. I wasn't sure if I wanted to do it or not, but as the season went on I got to know people and I liked it more.

AP: Yeah, at first I had doubts about it because I get shy around people. Really, as you go on, as you learn about everybody, it's not bad at all. I've had so much fun. Stay with it. You get used to working hard.
