Monahan, Roach, Jaber Lead IUN to 13th Win

Gary, Ind. – In the final game of the pre-Christmas schedule, the No. 13 Indiana Northwest RedHawks leaned heavily on a couple of familiar faces and a new addition to their roster to pull away from the visiting Roosevelt Lakers 61-41.  With the pace of the game slowed by both teams primarily playing zone defense, the RedHawks used a 17 point first half by junior guard Grayce Roach and stingy defense to build a 13 point advantage at 37-24 headed into the half.

In the second stanza, RedHawks All-American senior guard Nicki Monahan and senior forward Nariman Jaber would make their presence felt. Monahan finished with a game high 20 points and team high 9 rebounds and 6 assists, menawhie Jaber making her season debut for IU Northwest tallied 16 points on 7-10 shooting with 8 rebounds and 3 blocks in 25 minutes.

IU Northwest held Roosevelt's Page Gallimore to just four points on 2-11 shooting as she was also plagued by foul trouble throughout the night. Gallimore enetered the game as the nation's fifth leading scorer averaging better than 20 points per game. With the win, the RedHawks improved 10 13-3, their best 16 game start in program-history.

Coach's view:

"Our top players showed up tonight in a big way. Nicki (Monahan) and Grayce (Roach) proved again that they are two of the best guards in the nation and together form one the nation's best backcourts," said IUN Head Coach Ruan Shelton.

"Bernie (Bernadette Grabowski) didn't attempt a shot in 28 minutes tonight, however made her presence felt on the defensive end and led a team effort  to slow down and limit Gallimore throughout the evening.

Jaber was really outstanding, to play that way and make that kind of an impact after not playing in a competitive game in more than a year says so much about her talent, perseverance and readiness, all of her coaches and teammates are really happy for her. It was a great team win, I'm very proud of how hard this team plays for each other," added Shelton.
