Gary, IN - IU Northwest hosted Governors State Jaguars on Thursday at the Savannah Center. The RedHawks were energized from the start and kept the jaguars off-balanace throught the evening with a dominant 3-0 starght set victory, (25-19,25-21,25-15).
"For us coming into this match we needed to win. We had some struggles this past week, and Governor State is tough. They keep getting better with their strong presence from the international players. We needed a little confidence booster, and this was the match for us to win. This win means so much to us," said IU Northwest Head Coach Dawn Barnes.
"It is always stressful, since it's our crosstown rivalry match. The emotions were very high for us, but we were able to pull through. Going three was what we needed to get over the hump," added Barnes
The RedHawks were paced by Sophomore Tori Gardenhire, Alexis Blake and Freshman Mhejhana Williams offensively. Jade Mulvaney was perfect on the night hitting with 7 kills and no errors and 17 attemps, hitting .412. Sophmore, Tori Gardenhire led our defensive game with a career best 17 digs, while Junior Cassie Bryant followed with 13 digs and Freshman, Maddie Maatman finished with personal best of 10 digs. Sophmore Cara Nebel dished out 20 Assists on the night.
"Sometimes, we sit back and let teams come back and take the next couple of sets but this time we were able to take charge and follow through and finish," said Barnes. "The girls played well, but we have some things to keep working on. I feel we are headed in the right direction."
The RedHawks win improved their verall record to 4-8 and are back in action Sat. Sept. 23 at Concordia University Ann Abor with matches at 9a, 11a and 1p. We will face Rochester, Concordia and Carlow Universities. Next home match will be Tuesday, Sept. 26 at IU Kokomo at 7 p.m.
