[Cheerleading] 2012-2013 Indiana University Northwest Cheerleading Tryouts

Tryouts for the 2012-2013 Indiana University Northwest Cheerleading team will be held on Sunday, May 20th from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Savannah Center Gym. The tryouts are open to incoming freshman and current IU Northwest students. The cheerleading perform at men's and women's basketball games and also compete locally and at NCA College Nationals. Cheerleaders on the competition team are eligible for scholarships.

6-1 Center Adds Size and Experience to RedHawk Frontcourt

Valerie Zulevic a 6'1" center from Moriane Valley Community College has agreed to continue her education and basketball career at Indiana University Northwest beginning in the fall of 2012. Zulevic a native of Chicago, IL and Mother McAuley High School alum began her collegiate career at Illinois Institute of Technology (Chicago, IL) before transferring to Moraine Valley this past year. This past season, Zuleivc shrugged off early injury to help lead the Cyclones to a 24-9 record and birth in theNJCAA Region IV finals averaging 4.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.

[Men's Basketball] Hebron's Standout Guard Damon Wallace Commits to IU Northwest

Hebron High School senior point guard Damon Wallace has committed to Indiana University Northwest to continue his education and basketball career. The 5'9 Wallace was the igniter on both ends of the court for the sectional champion Hebron Hawks. Wallace averaged 18.4 points, 5 steals, and 3.1 assists per game in his senior season. He was named First Team All-Conference and First Team All-Area. Wallace owns the school record in steals.

The Redhawks welcome Crown Point High school guard Zak Bostian to the IU Northwest basketball program. Zak is a combo guard that can play both guard spots.

Latimore, Houston, Newcomb, Huizenga and Carstensen Named MVPs

Indiana University Northwest has announced their end of the season awards at their annual athletic awards banquet, Friday, April 27, at the Savannah Center. The administration, faculty, coaches, students and parents were in attendance as student-athletes were recognized for their academic and athletic achievements for the 2011-12 academic year. The women's volleyball team recognized Tabitha Newcomb and Zoey Huizenga as their co-most valuable players with Lauen Krempec receiving the team's RedHawk award. Senior Justin Latimore picked up men's basketball most valuable player honors while fellow senior James Beard was the recipient of the RedHawk award.

Knoxville-based HOF requests All-American's No. 23 for inclusion in "Ring of Honor" exhibit

The Women's Basketball Hall of Fame has requested the 2011-12 jersey worn by Indiana University Northwest All-American Sharon Houston. The Hall of Fame, located in Knoxville, Tenn., will display the jersey in its Ring of Honor exhibit, which recognizes approximately 100 collegiate and high school All-Americans for their outstanding play in 2011-12.

Last season, Houston (Merrillville) led the Lady RedHawks to a 19-12 season, including a school-record 16 consecutive win streak. And#2 seed in the A.I.I. Conference Championship Tournament.

Houston led the nation in three categories: scoring (20.2), rebounding (11.2), and blocks (3.6). Houston ranked in the top 20 nationally in eight total categories thus receiving NAIA All-American honors (2nd team) for the third straight year.

Indiana University Northwest and the Office of Student Life and Athletics will host its third annual 2012 RedHawks' Summer Basketball Camp for Kids the week of July 16. The four-day camp is open to all boys and girls ages 6-13, and will meet each day from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the IU Northwest Savannah Center Gymnasium, located just one-half mile south of I-80/94 at 3400 Broadway in Gary, Ind.

Senior Guard Led Redskins to First Sectional Title in 17 Years

Knox High School's Hope Wagner has agreed to continue her education and basketball career at Indiana Northwest beginning in the Fall of 2012. This past season Wagner helped rally the Redskins from a sluggish 2-10 start to their season all the way to their first sectional championship since 1995. Wagner led Knox in scoring (13.4) and assists while ranking second on the squad in rebounding (5.4), three point field goals and steals. In the 59-45 Sectional Championship victory over Hanover Central, paced the Redskins with 19 points and 5 assists in the history-making win. Wagner's efforts helped lead the Redskins to victories in 11 of their final 12 games to complete an incredible turnaround season.

5-10 Forward Starred for 28-2 Cougars

Megan Holland a 5'10" forward From Kalamazoo Valley Community College has agreed to continue her education and collegiate basketball career at Indiana Northwest beginning next Fall.Holland a native of Otsego, MI helped lead Kalamazoo Valley to a 28-2 record in 2011-12 while averaging 11.0 points and 8.1 rebounds per game while shooting 61% from the floor and 75% from the free throw line. Holland's Cougars climbed to a No. 2 National Ranking, claimed the MVCC Championship and advanced to the regional semifinals this past season. Holland tallied 15 points and 10 rebounds in the 84-72 win over Lake Michigan College in the MCCAA title game. She ranked third on the team in scoring, second in rebounding and first in field goal percentage. Earlier Holland poured in 20 points to go along with 11 rebounds in a 124-104 win over Jackson Community College. On February 18, 2012 Holland registered her third straight double-double with a 13 and 11 in a 77-49 rout oat Ancilla College

Crown Point High School senior Stephen Galik has agreed to continue his education and basketball career at IU Northwest beginning in the fall of 2012. The 6'7 forward/center from Crown Point, Indiana adds size and depth to the post position for the Redhawks basketball team. Galik will make an immediate impact.

When the RedHawks take the volleyball court next August, Justice will definitely be on their side.

Defensive specialist and libero Justice Anderson, a two-time letter-winner in volleyball for Hobart High School, signed recently to play for Indiana University Northwest, where she will study business. Anderson said she had considered attending IUPUI but that the opportunity to continue playing volleyball at Northwest Indiana's IU campus was too attractive to pass up.

Indiana University Northwest Head Men's Basketball Coach Jason Hawkins has announced that Valparaiso High School senior Drew Boetel has agreed to continue his education and basketball career at IUN beginning in the Fall of 2012. Boetel a 5'9" point guard from Valparaiso, Indiana helped lead the Vikings to a 12-9 record. Drew provided valuable leadership to the Vikings team averaging 8.0 points and 3.2 assists per game while shooting 40% from beyond the arc as a senior. He also shot 83% from the free throw line for his senior season. Boetel had a career high of 27 points against Michigan City High School on January 6, 2012.

The Indiana University Northwest cheerleaders received 1^st place in the All-Girl Cheer division at the NAIA Competitive Cheer and Dance Region 4 Qualifying Event on February 11^th held at Indiana University Northwest. This win qualifies the cheerleaders to compete in the NCA/NAIA Nationals on April 11^th-15^th in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Highland senior guard Brandon Reyes has committed to Indiana Northwest to continue his basketball career and education beginning in the Fall of 2012. The 6'2 guard from Highland, IN averaged 10.1 points per game for the 17-7 Trojans. Brandon was a first team All-Conference selection for the Northwest Crossroads Conference this season.

Senior Forward Caps career with Fourth Straight Selection

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced the 2012 Division II Women's Basketball All-America teams. Players are selected by the All-America committee. For the fourth straight season Indiana Northwest 6'4" senior forward Sharon Houston was honored by the committee as a NAIA Second Team All-American after averaging 20.2 points, 11.2 rebounds and 3.68 blocks per game. Houston ranked in the top six nationally in all three categories while leading the RedHawks to a 19-12 record and semifinal appearance in the A.I.I. Conference Tournament in 2011-12. IU Northwest won a school-record 16 consecutive games this past season which included road victories at #10 Bethel and at NCAA Division I Chicago State. During her career Houston led the RedHawks to consecutive A.I.I. Conference Championships and NAIA National Tournament Appearances in both 2010 and 2011, their first appearances in school-hotsory. Houston amassed 2,784 career points, 1,722 career rebounds and 498 career blocks. All three career marks are also school-records. "Sharon's career at IU Northwest is one that will likely never be matched in terms of impact and the numbers she put up. She helped to lead our team our program to national prominence and brought national recognition to our university and to Northwest Indiana. Our university, her teammates and coaches congratulate Sharon on this great honor and career," said Head Coach Ryan Shelton
