Budget concerns cited in decision to eliminate one of the university's four sports teams

The Indiana University Northwest Office of Student Life and Athletics formally announced today that it has eliminated its intercollegiate baseball program due to budget restrictions within the athletic program. Charles Gary, Ph.D., director of student life and athletics, made the announcement one day after informing players and coaches of the decision.

Halbe Gets Big Two-Run Double;Jefferson Gets Second Complete Game Win

(Gary, IN) All season long, head coach Dan Soria has said that these young Hawks can battle with anyone. They proved that and then some as they earned a home split with Goshen College taking the first game 5-3 while dropping the second game 11-3.

In game one, the home team got started early as Ryan Halbe led off the bottom of the first with a single. After Chris Samano struck out, Alex Ramirez roped a double to score the speedster Halbe from first and give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

[Baseball] Young RedHawks Compete vs Horizon League Member Crusaders

(Valparaiso, IN) The young RedHawks came to Valparaiso to face their first Division I opponent of the season when they faced the Crusaders at Emory G. Bauer Field. Although they lost, they played hard and they competed.

Steve Scoby paced the Crusaders with three hits, including two home runs and seven RBI to hand the Hawks a 17-1 defeat.

Valparaiso got all of the runs they needed in the bottom of the first inning off of starting pitcher Jimmy Flores when Scoby started the onslaught with a double to right center field. Damon McCormick singled up the middle to drive in Scoby. Justin Frane came up next and lined a single to center field and advanced to second on the throw.

[Baseball] Ashford Sweeps RedHawks in Saturday Twinbill

(Gary, IN) Jeremy Ratajczyk celebrated his 20th birthday on Saturday by belting two home runs. Unfortunately, the Ashford Saints ruined the party by sweeping the doubleheader 13-8 and 15-3.

In game one, the Saints put three quick runs on the board in the first inning against starter Demetrios Pitsas (Munster, IN). But the Hawks countered in the bottom of the frame with three of their own. Ethan Arvay (Schererville, IN) doubled to right and later scored on a squeeze bunt by Alex Ramirez (Hammond, IN).

(Camanchee, IA) An early scoring outburst and the mentality fighting back could not bring the RedHawks a road win as they lost both games o f a doubleheader against Ashford University by scores of 9-4 and 15-5.

In the first game, the Hawks scored first as Jeremy Ratajczyk delivered a run-scoring single after Ryan Halbe reached on a fielder's choice and Nick Moore singled. With that 1-0 lead, the Hawks struck for three in the top of the fourth.

(ROCHESTER, MI) The RedHawks were swept in a doubleheader on Friday against the Warriors of Rochester College by scores of 5-0 and 10-0. The first game seemed to be a good sign of things to come as the RedHawks remained competitive against the Warriors.The Warriors struck for three runs in the bottom of the second inning using four consecutive hits including a two-run double by Cory Diaz then added another run in the third on a monstrous home run by Jeff Martinez.

The baseball RedHawks host the Wolves of Cardinal Stritch on Tuesday March 30th in a doubleheader beginning at 1pm from RedHawk Field. After picking up their first victory of the season, the Hawks look to continue the momentum. The Wolves come to Gary after losing two of three to the Illinois Institute of Technology Scarlet Hawks and with a record of 4-14 overall while the Hawks come in with a record of 1-19.

On a cold Sunday, the RedHawks traveled to Calumet High School to take on the Crimson Wave of Calumet College of St. Joseph. The game started slow, but thanks to four RBI's by Ethan Arvay and some timely hitting, the Hawks recorded their first win of the season and matched their total from 2009 with an 11-7 triumph over the Crimson Wave.

The RedHawks dropped a doubleheader to the Trolls of Trinity Christian College by scores of 13-3 and 8-0. The Hawks dropped their record to 0-16 while the Trolls upped their record to 10-8 on the season.

In game one, the Trolls struck first in the bottom of the opening frame as Joseph Gura reached on an error by shortstop Ryan Halbe. Steve Pellack followed with a two-run home run off of sophomore pitcher Josh Santiago to give the Trolls a 2-0 lead.

As the case on Monday, the games will be taped and then aired later tonight. The first game will be replayed tonight at 7:30pm and the second game will be replayed tomorrow at 11am.

In the first game pitchers Jesse Tomich and Christian Jefferson held the Eagles to only two runs through six innings

A little over a month ago we reported that the IU Northwest RedHawks baseball team was gearing up for a season of "fall ball," a schedule of scrimmage games, to ascertain the team's strengths and weaknesses. The team ended the short season with an 8-4 record, a more experienced roster, and a confident coaching staff.
