Indiana University Northwest and the Office of Student Life and Athletics will kick off its' 2010 RedHawks Summer Basketball Camp for Kids on Monday, July 19 - 23, 2010. The sold-out camp open to all boys and girls ages 6-13, will meet each day from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. daily at the IU Northwest Savannah Center, located at 3400 Broadway in Gary, Ind.

[IUN] NAIA to Make Cheerleading a Competitive Sport

In 2011, the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) will become the first collegiate organization to offer Cheerleading and Dance as a Championship Sport. In recent years, the number of universities that consider Cheer and Dance varsity level has risen significantly. The IU Northwest cheerleading squad hopes to join their ranks.

Dr. Charles Gary, the Director of IU Northwest Athletics, said, "In the capable hands of coach [Taria] Taylor, I feel a cheerleading program would be the next ideal varsity sport at IUN. Our RedHawks are primed and ready to participate."

This week I sat down with Jermel Lamarr, a Student Life employee who has taken it upon himself to show leadership in coordinating and planning several campus events, including the Twister Challenge, Turkey Trot, and the wildly successful Wii Wednesdays. We discuss how IU Northwest has changed, and what students can look forward to in the next season of intramural sports.

This week I sat down to chat with a very busy member of the Athletic Department. Herman Miller trains IU Northwest athletes, conditioning them for game-day all year round. He also manages the weight room and works with injured players who want to get off the DL and back onto the court.

[IUN] Donation of a Bus to Student Life & Athletics

In the mad scramble to secure as much sponsorship as possible before the fall semester begins, some gifts stand tall above the rest.

Milford Christenson, the owner of Highland's Chevrolet dealership, is donating a bus to the Office of Student Life and Athletics. The bus is a 14 passenger Chevrolet Starcraft with the IU Northwest name and logo-Red, the new sports mascot-painted on the side. It will be used to shuttle the sports teams to and from games. Without the paint job, the bus is worth $50,000.
